This year, KCON NY kicked off with a three-day event and star-studded lineup, with groups BTS, MAMAMOO, SEVENTEEN, BTOB and DAY6, to Crush, Dynamic Duo, Eric Nam, and Ailee.
The concert was expanded into two different nights, and KCON announced Klub KCON, an evening of dance, music, and a surprise special guest, would be hitting the East Coast this year after being a success at KCON 2015 LA. Luckily, I was there to experience the fun, so I’ll be sharing my experiences and photos with you all!
On Thursday, June 23, the day commenced with early check in. After lining up, people obtained their vouchers and checked out the packed fan engagement schedule for the following two days, with Ailee, BTOB, Seventeen and Crush for Day 1 and BTS, Day6, Eric Nam, and Mamamoo for Day 2.
With some struggles, I managed to get hold of a good amount of vouchers, including Red Carpets for both nights and Hi-Touch for Seventeen, Day6, Eric Nam, and Ailee, and audience passes for Mamamoo and BTOB.
I then got into the venue for Klub KCON, where fans were eagerly anticipating the night’s special guest. Who could it be?
After some time, boy group Seventeen hit the stage. Twelve of the thirteen members were present, as member Wonwoo (my bias ruiner) remained in Korea due to health reasons. However, the boys were enthusiastic to greet fans, and after answering a few questions, showed us the hairpin dance they’d do if they went to a club.
The day wrapped up on a pleasant note, and I was thrilled for the next day’s events.
The next morning, Friday the 24th, BTOB was the first fan engagement, which also happened to go by very quickly. Members talked about how much they enjoyed spending time in the U.S., and that because they love American hamburgers, that was what they were most excited for.
During the Hi-Touch, Ilhoon received a hat from a fan and he put it on right away (much to the fan’s delight).
Afterwards, I made my way to the Seventeen fan engagement, excited because I had a Hi-Touch. Because there were so many members, the Hi-Touch was quite a long process, each fan having to greet each individual member. However, the boys were sweet and patient, meeting face-to-face with U.S. fans for the first time.
Seventeen discussed their new album, “Very Nice,” which is a repackaged version of “Love&Letter,” and noted it would come out very soon. When member Vernon spoke in English, fans went wild with excitement and screams.
Next up was Ailee’s fan engagement. As a big fan of Ailee, I was so excited to meet her for the first time!
She was stunning in person, and said she was staying in New Jersey longer to spend time with friends and family, who all were also coming to the concert. She greeted fans with a warm smile and unrivaled enthusiasm, and at the conclusion of the engagement, climbed on top of the table to include everyone in her selfie. She thanked fans for all the wonderful compliments, saying they all meant so much to her.
At the end of the night, I attended the Red Carpet, and then the concert. It ended on a bright note, and it was just the start of more to come.
Seventeen kicked off the concert. The audience went wild with excitement, continuously singing along to their catchy, upbeat tracks. They brought out a couch, their necessary prop, for the dynamic choreography of “Pretty U.”
The boys even did a special stage, performing old K-pop tracks including Super Junior‘s hit song, “Sorry Sorry.”
Ailee was up next, and was the co-MC with BTS‘s Rap Monster. Ailee gave a shout out to her friends and family members at the show, who all came to give her their support.
About thirty seconds into one of her songs, the audio stopped, and being professional, she continued to sing acapella. The audience even sang along with her, but after some time, she was forced to stop and returned backstage until the audio was fixed a minute later. She hit the stage with full energy, and pumped up by the fans chanting her name, successfully performed the rest of her set, belting perfect high notes.
She cheerfully (and humorously) wondered if the audio going out was a coming home gift, as it was the first time it’s happened to her.
Boy group BTOB hit the stage next with a good amount of both ballads and dance tracks. After performing their slow songs, they told the audience to get ready to dance. Unfortunately, they didn’t perform “Wow,” which I was looking forward to.
Crush and Dynamic Duo were the perfect conclusion to the show, hyping up the crowd so much with their invigorating performances. My row was jumping so much, dancing along to the music. They even held a collaboration stage together, wrapping up the night.
Day 1 concluded with a round of fan engagements and energizing performances! Our coverage of Day 2 is coming soon!
