The boys of NCT Dream are back with their latest music video for “We Go Up”.
The track itself wanders through a variation of musical styles that play to each member’s strengths. Starting off with no preamble, Jaemin launches into a rap before Jeno cuts in with short, conversational beats. As the song picks up, Mark flows easily into his verse and hands the talk-style rap off to Jisung. This is the first transition of the song from rap to vocal line, when Chenle and Haechan lead us into the light and contented chorus with all the members.
The music video is playful and youthful, showing the boys fooling around in fancy clothes, casual style, and basketball courts. The scenes all tell the same story: the boys are happy and unencumbered. Many of the effects in the video are nostalgic, like we’re looking at the boys through a fond memory.
Later on, as the song progresses, there’s a deliberate slow down, featuring wistful vocals from many of the members, showing off once again the versatility of the NCT unit. The song ends in warm musical tones that hint at a longing and hope for the boys. Somehow, track is still distinctly NCT Dream’s bubbly and playful style, even it’s it’s variations. As they sing “let’s end this track and go to the next stage” we can’t help but look forward to the rest of the mini-album, set to be released later on September 3rd, 2018.
